Abstract

Tolerance has a tremendous impact upon the unity of the country. That is why Islam, with its moderate approach, has always emphasized the importance of protecting the rights and sanctities of others and rooted many values and principles that seek to build a cultural partnership between the members of the same community and run away from causes of conflict, dissension and animosity among the people of the nation. This study, therefore, aims at presenting the virtue of exercising tolerance by members of the same community and illustrating its impact upon the society and the integrity of the homeland. This study further seeks to highlight the concept of tolerance in Islamic culture as well as highlighting the global pluralism and how it is viewed by Islam. This study further seeks to demonstrate the impact of tolerance upon both the national unity and the social wholeness. The study has concluded that Islam does not view difference as a justification for dissension and conflict between nations or a barrier obstructing the path towards unified efforts and close collaboration between the peoples of the world, rather than the driving force towards closer acquaintance and harmony between peoples and a God-given method to enrich the world with ever-renewed advantages, numerous gifts and broadly varied talents and propensities. This study has recommended to call for the urgent need to activate the civilized dialogues so as to enshrine tolerance as the greatest of virtues advocated by Islam in particular and by the human community in general.
