Abstract

This study aimed to develop a general personality system, counseling and psychotherapy theory which accommodates counseling theories and their therapeutic techniques in a single coherent structure to minimize the fragmentation of efforts among counselors, particularly beginners, accommodates new counseling and therapeutic techniques with flexibility and smoothly, and is effective in achieving the goals of counseling in terms of flexibility and coverage of various disorders, the diversity of means and techniques, and the diversity of the capacities of psychological counselors. It was found that relying on the system approach is a discovery towards the solution.

Through contemplation, thinking, and analysis of personality, counseling and psychotherapy theories and refection on the positive aspects and criticism of them, the researcher put forward the idea of the whole proposed theory as a hypothesis, considering the consistency of the components of the theory with the system approach within the single structure, as well as their coherence and compatibility. The theory was presented to ten experts from among personality psychology and psychological counseling professors to verify the cohesion of the structure and general framework, coherence, clarity, simplicity, flexibility, coverage of the phenomenon under consideration, appropriateness for research and experimentation, usability and added value to human knowledge in personality psychology, counseling and psychotherapy.

The study has provided a general personality system, counseling and therapy proposal that describes personality and explains the process of producing normal and disordered behavior and many flexible ways of personality counseling and therapy through the components of the internal personality system (input, processes, content, and output) and the external system reflected in the environment as stimuli and feedback. The theory is characterized by coherence, consistency and interdependence in respect of personality, personality counseling, and accommodation of all counseling and psychotherapy theories in one broad, flexible framework, and it provides a basis for research to verify the empirical validity of the theory.

The study arrived at the following components of the theory: general and specific postulates and principles, concepts and hypotheses related to the concept, structure, interaction, development and disorder of personality, and counseling and psychotherapeutic techniques based on the system approach.
